3 Reasons to moisturize in your 40s

Updated: Feb 4

When I was in my 20’s I was religious about my facial routine. I would use facial masks, get facial peels, and moisturize regularly. In my 30’s I got busy in my career and probably a bit lazy and paid little attention to a facial beauty routine. Once I hit 40 I freaked out and realized I needed to get my facial routine back on track—particularly moisturizing, because it is so important to keep moisturized as you age.

Products with hyaluronic acid promote healthier youthful skin. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in your skin cells and aids in retaining moisture and hydration. However, harsh environmental issues and sun damage can reduce your hyaluronic levels. I don’t know about you, but my skin always looks better and more youthful when I keep a regular facial moisturizing routine.

Your Face Becomes Drier. As you age your skin starts to slow the production of sebum—naturally produced in our bodies to moisturize and protect the skin. When this production slows down your skin becomes dry and you need to supplement with a moisturizer to keep your skin moisturized and supple.

Your Skin Losses Firmness. As we age our skin naturally loses its firmness. We’ve long lost that ‘baby fat” we had in our twenties! Your skin requires moisture to repair itself—the drier your skin, the harder it is for your skin to repair itself.

Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles. Moisturizing supports the reduction of fine lines and winkles—and we all want to stay far away from wrinkles!

I have a facial moisturizing routine that I do in the evening. It consists of cleansing my face first and then applying moisturizer. For about the last 2 years I have been using Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. I apply it all over my face and neck.

I find that the skin under my eyes needs a little extra care because that area tends to absorb moisture much faster than the rest of my face, so I use a second product for keeping that area moisturized. For under and around my eyes I use the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel-Cream Eye.
